What one generally calls "explanation s of the meaning of a word" can, very roughly, be divided into verbal and ostensive definitions.

一般的に「語の意味の説明」と呼ばれているものは、非常に大まかに言って、言葉による定義と、実物を具体的に示す定義に分けられる。

It will be seen later in what sense this division is only rough and provisional (and that it is, is an important point).

The verbal definition, as it takes us from one verval expression to another, in a sense gets us no futher, In the ostensive definition however we seem to make a much more real step towards learning the meaning.

言葉による定義は、我々をある言葉の表現から別の言葉の表現へを導くのであるから、ある意味では、我々は全く先に進んでいない。
しかし、実物を具体的に示す定義は、我々を、意味を学ぶ方向へと大きな現実的一歩を進ませるように思われる。

One difficulty which strikes us is that for many words in our language there do not seem to be ostensive definitions; e.g. for such words as "one", "number", "not", etc.

我々がぶつかるひとつの困難は、我々の言語における多くの語に、実物を具体的に示す定義があると思えない、ことだ。
たとえば、「１」「数」「ではない」等のような言葉である。

和訳に関しての疑問

「One difficulty which……」は、黒崎・大森・ミック訳すべてで、「すぐに（我々がぶつかる困難は）」と訳されているが、「すぐに」という意味がどこから来るのかわからない。「One」に「ひとつの」という意味以外に「すぐに」という意味があるのだろうか？　あるいは、「strike」の意味か。文脈による意味か。文脈の場合、3訳とも同じになるとは思えないが、私が思えなくてもそういうものかもしれない。
